History of the Palace of Catalan Music Barcelona
Palace was designed in the Catalan Modernista style by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. It was built between 1905 and 1908 for Orfeó Català. Orfeó Català is a choral society that was founded in 1891 and it was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the Renaixença (Catalan Rebirth).
In 1909, the architect received an award from the Barcelona City Council for the best building completed the previous year. Palace was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, it is the only concert hall declared as such. More than 500,000 people attend musical concerts at the Palace each year, ranging from symphonic and chamber music to jazz and Cançó (Catalan song).
This iconic establishment stands as a testament to the world of symphonic music, boasting a rich history that includes the illustrious presence of musical luminaries like Igor Stravinsky and Richard Strauss. What may come as a surprise is the venue’s role as a guardian of the city’s heritage, harbouring a remarkable collection of historical documents that date back to the fifteenth century.
In addition to its musical significance, it serves as a repository of the city’s past, preserving invaluable records that offer a window into centuries gone by. This unique blend of musical grandeur and historical preservation makes it a truly exceptional cultural treasure.
